“If you don’t make time for your wellness, you will be forced to make time for your illness.”

~Joyce Sunada

If I have anything to offer you today, it is this: Make your health a priority. Make daily choices that are health promoting for your body, mind, spirit, and relationships. It is not selfish, and you won’t be sorry. You’ll be healthy and you’ll have time for all the things that make life worth living.

The Sanskrit word atha (ah-tah) means now, this very moment. It is described as the ever unfolding present moment that sits at the interface of what is and what will be. What will be is determined by what happens in the atha. Attuning to the atha requires focused awareness. What becomes of the atha requires conscious choice.

Yogis strive to be in the atha. In poses, the atha reveals misalignment and offers an opportunity for adjustment. In meditation, the atha offers an experience of the expanded field of awareness that houses our intuition and higher intelligence. Through breathwork, the atha teaches us everything we need to know about balance, rhythm, inspiration, and letting go. In daily life, the atha offers opportunities to hear the body quietly ask for nourishment, movement, sleep, or signal satiation.

One of my yoga teachers once told me, “The body speaks in sensation. In the beginning, it whispers. If you don’t hear it, it turns up the volume until you do.” Sensations that turn into chronic pain or illness are whispers that weren’t heard, or were ignored.

In the atha is where you will hear the whispers of the body as felt sensations.

Is your body whispering to you? Are you ignoring signs of imbalance? Do you have minor health issues that you are expecting to just go away on their own? Are you sacrificing your health to meet other people’s needs? Please don’t wait for your body to scream. Prioritize your whole health, now.
