Getting Back into Routine after a Crisis

What do you do when a crisis interrupts your daily rhythm?

It can be hard to maintain good habits under normal circumstances, but when you are out of your routine, your home, your work environment, healthy habits can go right out the window.

It’s ok.

Judgement about what you did or didn't stick to is a waste of energy. It doesn’t matter. What matters is what you do when the acute phase of the crisis is over.

Exhale. Take stock of your situation. Orient towards the things that make you feel good in body, mind, and spirit. Then, take a small step in their direction.

Just like rebuilding anything that has been damaged, start with the most important things, and build out from there. What do you need to repair first? Healthy eating? Meditation? Exercise?

What is one small thing you could do to get started?

Some ideas:

  • Pick up a few healthier food items from the store. Having fruit on hand to replace chips and cookies, will make it easier to choose something healthy when hunger strikes.
  • Take a short walk after dinner. Adding in a little movement after eating will boost digestion and help you feel more at home in your body.
  • Sit quietly for 2 minutes in the morning. Pressure to meditate for a long time can thwart your efforts. Start with just two minutes. You can even do them in bed!
  • Drink a glass of water. When you catch yourself reaching for a soda or a snack, drink a glass of water instead.
  • Give yourself some space and quiet. Unplug from the news or social media and be with yourself for a few minutes throughout the day. This will help clear your mind and reconnect you with yourself.

Re-establishing routine is not a switch you can flip. It takes patience. Invite your good habits back in. Let them reroot so you can nurture them back into fullness.

In time, everything will be restored.
