It isn't Dinner, It's Supper

Welcome to Wednesday Wisdom! I’m going to be popping into your inbox each week with a pro- tip to support you in your efforts to make wise choices that support your ability to thrive.

When I look around at modern culture, I see an absence of consideration for the needs of the body. This lack of consideration isn't wise, and can foster illness and disease. What I wish to help you create is a daily habit routine that fosters joy, connectivity, and personal growth. This dynamic state of aliveness is a balance of movement, nutrition, sleep and rest, and a sense of connection to others and spirit. When you attune to your habits and make wise choices that foster aliveness, you will thrive.

For yogis, this balance is achieved through “dinacharya”, or, daily rhythm. When we are in rhythm, we are in the flow of life and the energy of the life force supports us. When we are not in rhythm, we are swimming upstream. Simple things become more effortful than they should be.

Take digestion, for example. If we are to take our meals in a way that is supported by nature’s energies, we will eat during daylight hours, and have our last meal by or before 7pm. When we eat late in the evening, we risk incomplete digestion, which results in a build up of undigested food in the GI tract. When we have this toxic build up, everything slows down, our elimination is affected, and we may sit around with old food putrefying in our digestive tract, polluting our blood, and causing a whole host of problems in the long term.

Who wants that? Not me, and I’m assuming, not you.

There’s a simple way to improve digestion, lessen your toxic load, increase absorption of nutrients, lose weight, and get better sleep. It’s free, and you can start right away.

Eat an earlier, lighter dinner.

Take your main meal midday when the sun is highest in the sky and your digestion is most fired up. Follow up with a small, easily digested supper, before 7pm. This simple shift will allow your stomach to empty completely before the nighttime bile cycle begins around 10pm. When that nighttime energy is not consumed by digestion, your body can do some serious housekeeping while you sleep.

My dad was a wise man. We had an ongoing argument about dinner. “It isn’t dinner”, he would say, “It’s supper”. I would roll my eyes. Now I know that he was speaking from a time when this wisdom was practiced by most families. To sup, to “have a light meal” is a practice we have moved away from as we become more and more disconnected from nature’s rhythm.

Try it for a week and see what results you get! Potential improvements in your well being include:

  • Deeper sleep.
  • Improved morning energy.
  • Clearer skin.
  • Weight loss.
  • Less bloating and gas..
  • More full elimination.
  • Regularity.
  • Less aches and pains.

A side benefit of eating an earlier dinner is that it frees up your evenings for activities other than cooking, and cleaning the kitchen. Want to read more or spend more time with your loved ones? An earlier, lighter, dinner will give you the time and energy to do it!
